History and tradition combine seamlessly here with the modern; recent investment has breathed new life into many of the county’s traditional resorts making them relevant today.
Traditional skills once thrived in the county; the rich soils of its rural interior and relative proximity to London’s markets supported fruit-growing and Kent gained a reputation as the ‘Garden of England’. Its extensive forests gave rise to wood-working trades; coopers, wheelwrights, basket-makers all supported the agricultural activities with everything from fruit ladders and hop-picking stilts to cricket bats made locally. Today, Shepherd Neame (Britain’s oldest brewery) and Biddenden Vineyards and Cider Works – are among the survivors of these industries.
With renewed interest in where our food comes from, farmers’ markets and food festivals have sprung up throughout Britain and Kent, with its rich food heritage, is no exception. In recent years, ‘Produced in Kent’ with its distinctive oast-house logo, has been established to champion the county’s growers and producers, boosting the local economy by pointing consumers in their direction through a range of food ‘trails’.
However, visitors have been flocking to Kent since Medieval times; as a major centre of Christianity, Canterbury with its magnificent cathedral has always attracted thousands of pilgrims a year. During the 18th century ‘taking the waters’ became fashionable among the wealthy and the Tunbridge Wells spa flourished. In later, Georgian, times the craze for sea-bathing took off and many of Kent’s fishing villages became resorts; Margate’s Royal Seabathing Hospital (now luxury apartments) dates from this era.
However, just 40 years later, it was the coming of the railway which really opened up the county moving freight more efficiently than the waterways and kick-starting a tourism boom by making travel more accessible for everyone; the Canterbury and Whitstable Railway (now the Crab and Winkle cycleway) claimed to have run the world’s first regular passenger service.
Perhaps the most tangible reminders of this county’s colourful past are the castles and manor houses which adorn its landscape. Historically, Kent has been one of Britain’s most strategically important counties in terms of national defence. Lovingly restored, many now open their doors to tell their fascinating stories to the public.
From luxury cottages Kent, and its many aspects, awaits discovery by visitors who seek those essential holiday ingredients – fine food, a fascinating heritage and stunning scenery.

While staying at one of our luxury Kent cottages you’ll no doubt want to get out and about, ensuring that you experience at least some of the county’s top attractions during your stay. Here’s a ‘Top 10’ list of some of the best places to visit and activities to try.

1. Sample a food trail
‘Produced in Kent’ publishes some excellent guides to help visitors explore the county’s rich food heritage. Featuring local producers, these describe the history of each product, traditional recipes and even contain walks which take in locations where they can be purchased. Examples include: Apple Source; Red, White and Brut (wine); Hops ‘n’ Downs (beer); Cherry Ripe; Soul to Sole and Sheep Ahoy! There is also a free guide available to food, drink and crafts in the county, Kent’s Finest. For details visit: Produced in Kent

2. Immerse yourself in art
Two seaside resorts in particular – Margate and Folkestone – have reinvented themselves as centres for the creative arts in recent years. Why not view the latest exhibitions at Margate’s seafront Turner Contemporary gallery, or investigate Folkestone’s Creative Quarter which can be found in the heart of the old town.

3. Go down to the woods
The county of Kent is especially rich in ancient woodland, much of it way-marked and accessible to the public. Sites of interest include the Kent Downs Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, which lies to the north-west of Ashford and Blean Woods, between Canterbury and Whitstable.

4. Try kite-surfing
Many centres now offer lessons in this water-sport, which combines the skill of flying a kite with the thrill of surfboarding. Whitstable and Dymchurch are just two of the locations where you can experience this adrenalin rush.

5. Catch a boat
Take a boat trip along the River Stour on the Sandwich River Bus, you may be able to spot some seals, or go sightseeing with Canterbury Historic River Tours for an alternative view of this attractive city.

6. Take a trip back in time
From romantic ruins to some of the best-preserved monuments in the country, Kent is full of castles and historic houses, each with their own story to tell. Here are some of the best; Dover Castle, Lullingworth Roman villa, Hever Castle (ancient seat of the Boleyn family), Deal (and neighbouring Walmer) Castle, Down House (home of Charles Darwin), Chartwell (family home of Winston Churchill), Ightham Mote manor house, Penshurst Place, Leeds Castle, Knole and Scotney Castle.

7. Smell the flowers
While many of the properties listed above have beautiful gardens, additionally you might like to visit Sissinghurst Castle Gardens (created by Vita Sackville-West and Sir Harold Nicolson), Brogdale (home of the National Fruit Collection), Quex and Goodnestone Park Gardens.

8. Help rare animals
With the emphasis on conservation, Howletts (and Port Lympne) Wild Animal Park was established in beautiful, ancient parkland by The Aspinall Foundation to conserve endangered species, with a view to returning them to the wild wherever possible. This registered charity also actively campaigns on wildlife issues.

9. Visit a theme park
In addition to the amusement parks and fairground rides normally associated with seaside resorts, Kent is home to Diggerland (Gillingham), Dickens World (Chatham) and The Hop Farm Family Fun (near Maidstone).

10. Simply soak up the sun
According to The Beach Guide, Kent’s Top Ten beaches are as follows: Sunny Sands (Folkestone), Hythe Beach, The Bay, Westbrook Bay and Walpole Bay (all Margate), Minster Leas (Sheppey), Main Sands (Ramsgate), Louisa Bay and Stone Bay (both Broadstairs) and Whitstable West Beach. What do you think?
