Luxury cottages Sussex

Luxury Sussex cottagesLuxury Sussex cottages offer the perfect base from which to discover the many attractions of this beautiful area on a holiday, or short break. The region covers the two counties of East and West Sussex; to impress the locals, it’s important to know which one you happen to be in! Both counties enjoy fabulous shorelines, ranging from spectacular Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters chalk cliffs in East Sussex to the fascinating creeks of Chichester Harbour in West Sussex.

Between these two special areas – both now protected for their landscape value – lie a vast range of beaches, some wild, some urban.
If it’s not a beach day, visitors to Sussex can still enjoy the great outdoors by venturing inland to discover the glorious Sussex countryside. A good starting point is the Weald and Downland Museum at Singleton, near Chichester. Ancient buildings from across Sussex and the neighbouring counties of Kent, Hampshire and Surrey, have been rescued and faithfully restored to their original state here to demonstrate what rural life would have been like over the past 500 or so years.
At the very eastern edge of the region lies the lovely old Cinque port of Rye, overlooking the lonely Romney Marshes, a distinctive area straddling the East Sussex/Kent border famous for its Romney Sheep and salt marsh lamb – well worth a visit in itself. Like Rye, neighbouring Winchelsea was also once a major port. Today the sea has receded from this ancient town, whose fine Medieval cellars can be explored (tours generally run from April to October).
West of here, the attractive streets and harbour area of Hastings Old Town are overrun with buccaneers on the town’s annual Pirate Day in July with festivities continuing during Old Town Carnival Week. Inland, the town of Battle with its many fine buildings and Abbey is a popular destination at the heart of what is now termed  ‘1066 Country’ by the local tourist board.
Celebrating the 80th anniversary of its famous De La Warr Pavilion with special exhibitions of contemporary art and family entertainment, the Edwardian resort of Bexhill On Sea lies between Hastings and neighbouring Eastbourne. The latter has become well-known for its prestigious tennis tournament, which precedes Wimbledon fortnight and is used by many top players as a warm-up during late June. This town, with its sunny reputation, also hosts Airbourne, an annual, free air display every August.
Inland, a tour of the rolling Wealden countryside, between the chalk escarpments of the North and South Downs, is recommended. This patchwork landscape of small fields, scattered farms, and woodland is all that remains of the ancient forest which once covered much of these parts. Here can be found the Ashdown Forest, home to Winnie the Pooh and his friends.
Continuing west along the coast beyond Beachy Head and the Seven Sisters, the seaside city of Brighton, with its popular beaches and bustling old shopping streets is truly a resort with something to offer everyone as its annual Brighton Pride festival of diversity demonstrates. The county boundary runs through Portslade, an ancient village now part of the Brighton and Hove conurbation.
Travelling west along the coast, the visitor passes through a ribbon of seaside development to arrive at Worthing. While holidaying here, Oscar Wilde wrote the Importance of being Earnest; today the town is noted for its cinema and theatres. The region’s longest River, the Arun, flows into the sea at Littlehampton, a small resort west of here with sandy, award-winning beaches. A short distance inland, within the South Downs National Park, attractive Arundel and its castle stand guard on the riverside, while upstream can be found picturesque Amberley, with its thatched cottages and industrial museum.
Bognor and Chichester are the remaining two coastal communities of any size, the first notable for its award-winning beaches the second for its historic centre and vast natural harbour, designated an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty.  Inland, the picturesque market towns of Midhurst and Petworth lie within easy reach, the latter home to Petworth House where the National Trust displays many fine art works.
While staying in one of our luxury holiday cottages Sussex, and its many attractions, can be explored.

While staying at one of our luxury Sussex cottages you’ll no doubt want to get out and about. Here’s our ‘Top 10’ list of some of the best places to visit and activities to try.

1. Do Battle at Hastings
Take a tour of ‘1066 Country’ to discover how the Normans conquered England. From Hastings Castle – the first fortresss to be built on English soil by conquering Duke William – to the famous town of Battle, its Abbey and discovery trail; Pevensey, where William landed, to Herstmonceaux Castle, former home of the Royal Greenwich Observatory; history is dramatically brought to life here at every turn.

2. Find out about the rustic life of yesteryear
Would you have survived living in the countryside hundreds of years ago? Find out about the rustic lifestyle of yesteryear at this fascinating museum in the village of Singleton, near Chichester, where rural buildings from bygone ages have been lovingly restored to throw light on the lives of our ancestors.

3. Have a flutter
The Goodwood House estate, near Chichester, is home to one of Britain’s premier racecourses and also hosts the motorsport Festival of Speed each year. The Glorious Goodwood racing season extends from the beginning of May through to early October. Goodwood House itself is open to the public; on-site attractions include golf and a hotel and health spa. Goodwood is located just off the A285 Chichester road.

4. Take Afternoon Tea on the Bluebell Line
What better way to travel than by steam train through this beautiful corner of the Sussex countryside. The Bluebell Line runs for 11 miles from Sheffield Park (near Haywards Heath) to East Grinstead. Advance bookings are advised for special services like the Afternoon Tea trips.

5.Have a beach day
According to The Beach Guide, the most popular East Sussex beach is at St Leonard’s, near Hastings and, in West Sussex, at Bognor Regis. However, many fine beaches can be found in between. At the extremities of the region, Camber Sands (East Sussex) and West Wittering beach (West Sussex) offer fine, wide-open expanses of sand.

6. Shop in The Lanes
Explore these quirky, winding streets located just behind Brighton’s lively seafront. Many small, independent retailers are based here offering the unusual and unexpected.

7. Marvel at the mosaics
The Chichester area has been strategically important since Roman times, as evidenced by the luxuries unearthed at Fishbourne Roman Palace and the city centre’s Roman bathhouse. Fishbourne and the brand new Novium museum, with their fascinating displays and artefacts, throw light on the Roman era in Britain.

8. Appreciate fine art
The National Trust’s finest collection of art can be viewed at Petworth House which is now managed by the Trust. JMW Turner was a regular visitor here; many of the paintings displayed are the work of this famous 19th-century landscape artist. The Capability Brown-designed park is home to a large herd of fallow deer, which Turner was fond of painting.

9. Get some fresh air
Beachy Head, with its famous red-and-white striped lighthouse, is the UK’s highest chalk sea cliff. From Eastbourne, visitors can walk, cycle or catch the bus up to this iconic landmark. At the top there is a pub and visitor centre, where information can be obtained about activities in the beautiful Sussex Downs National Park.

10. View the harbouring wildlife
Chichester harbour is a natural haven protected by its special legal status as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Administered by the Chichester Harbour Conservancy, it can be explored on foot or by boat. The Conservancy publishes guides to more than 50 miles of public footpath in the area and details of boat trips on sailing craft.
