1. Oxford

Known as the city of ‘dreaming spires’, Oxford is home to one of the oldest and most prestigious universities in Europe. Many of the famous colleges can be visited as well as the Bodleian – one of the great libraries of the world – the wide-ranging collection at the Ashmolean Museum, and the oldest botanic gardens in the world. There are also boat trips on the River Thames or punting on the River Cherwell. Guided walking tours and open-top bus sightseeing tours are great ways of taking in the city’s architecture and heritage.

2. The Chilterns

The Chilterns form a long chalk escarpment stretching from Oxfordshire through Buckinghamshire to Bedfordshire. They are covered in impressive beech woods where a walk is a joy at any time of year but especially when the trees are in their autumnal splendour. Dotted throughout the Chilterns, it is still possible to find charming, half-timbered country pubs selling traditional ales.

Cotswolds3. The Cotswolds

As the Thames winds westwards from Oxford towards its source in Gloucestershire, the charming towns and villages take on a Cotswold appearance with honey-coloured sandstone buildings, many dating back to Georgian times including Witney, Burford, Great Tew and Minster Lovell among others. This delightful region is quintessentially English and one of the most beautiful areas in the country, as well as the largest Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in England.

4. Blenheim Palace

Blenheim Palace is a World Heritage Site, one of England’s finest houses, and a great day out. It is the birthplace of Winston Churchill (he is buried in the nearby village of Bladon). The interior is an outstanding example of English Baroque architecture whilst the vast surrounding parkland was designed by Capability Brown. All the family will be delighted by the many attractions in the grounds including the small train and a maze.

5. Abingdon

The former county town of Berkshire Abingdon sits on the right bank of the River Thames, a short distance downstream from Oxford. The magnificent County Hall dominates the Market Place. The building stands on pillars with a market space sheltering under the courtrooms. The County Hall is the venue of an unusual annual event which has been occurring for at least two hundred years. Here, fruit buns are thrown from the roof to crowds of people waiting in the market place below.
