luxury blackpool cottagesLuxury Blackpool cottages offer the ideal accommodation for exploring the delights of this traditional seaside town, the Lancashire coastline and surrounding countryside. It was Blackpool’s vast, sandy beach which first attracted tourists to this small village when the fashion for sea-bathing took off in late-Georgian times.
The coming of the railway in the mid-19th century sealed the town’s fate as a seaside destination, fuelling its development and a population boom.
The famous Blackpool Tower was constructed at the height of this growth. This Grade 1 listed building, modelled on the great Eiffel Tower of Paris, opened in 1894 complete with lifts.
Surviving a sometimes chequered past, today the Tower remains one of the resort’s main tourist draws; modern re-investment has created a breath-taking observation deck and dungeon attraction here, while the traditions of its circus and ballroom also continue.
Without doubt another reason visitors flock to Blackpool is to experience the thrills of its Pleasure Beach. One of the UK’s oldest seaside amusement parks, it dates back to 1896. An inventory of its roller coasters and white-knuckle rides reads like a trip from present times back through the history of British theme parks – everyone has their favourite ride at Blackpool.
The town’s other popular tourist spots include Madame Tussaud’s, the Sea Life aquarium, Sandcastle Water Park (South Beach), Blackpool Zoo, and the new Comedy Carpet art installation, immortalising the nation’s best-loved comedians (by the Tower).
Cultural attractions include the Grundy Art Gallery (Queen Street, free admission) and the Opera House and Winter Gardens while one of the town’s top annual events is the ever-popular Blackpool Illuminations, which extend the tourist season through September into the beginning of November each year.
