Luxury cottages Hampshire

Beech Tree AvenueLuxury Hampshire cottages offer the perfect base from which to discover the many attractions of this county while on a holiday, or short break. Hampshire is, perhaps, best known for its trees which should be no surprise as one fifth of its landscape is wooded. From the beech-clad slopes (known as ‘hangers’) of its rural, eastern district to the vast tracts of woodland and heath which comprise the New Forest, it is a tree-lover’s paradise. With two National Parks falling within its borders, Hampshire has a rich rural heritage of agriculture and wood-working traditions.

The lovely South Downs National Park, with its rolling hills and wooded vales, extends across the centre of the county as far as its capital, the cathedral city of Winchester.
To the south lies the New Forest; once a Royal hunting ground and nurtured, down the years, as a source of timber for the Nation’s fleet. Nowadays, National Park status protects this unique landscape for posterity. Deer, ponies and cattle roam the forest at will, creating a timeless feel.
To the west, the Test Valley, between Winchester and Salisbury, is another of this county’s best-kept secrets. Here, the River Test flows through chalk downland providing a home for the sought-after brown trout.
Hampshire’s coastline is low-lying and characterised by wooded inlets, natural harbours, marshland and shingle spits overlooking The Solent – the narrow strip of water separating mainland England from the Isle of Wight. Beauty spots worth exploring here include the wildlife haven of Chichester Harbour and small town of Emsworth, Lymington Town Quay and the Beaulieu River.
The resort of Hayling Island boasts traditional seaside attractions and award-winning beaches, while the vast natural harbour at Portsmouth still plays its part in the nation’s defence; the visitor attractions here are man-made. From luxury cottages Hampshire and its many attractions can be explored.

While staying at one of our luxury Hampshire cottages you’ll no doubt want to get out and about, ensuring that you experience the best that the county has to offer during your stay. Here’s a ‘Top 10’ list of some of the best places to visit and activities to try.

1. Spend a day in the docks
At Portsmouth Historic Dockyard there’s so much to see and do, it’s hard to pack it all in to one day. Visitors can now purchase a single ticket to gain admission to many of the attractions here, which include: the Royal Navy Submarine Museum and HMS Alliance, The Museum of Naval Firepower, the Royal Marines Museum, the new Mary Rose Museum, Lord Nelson’s famous warship HMS Victory, HMS Warrior 1860 and the 170-metre high Spinnaker Tower.

2. Discover the New Forest National Park
The Lyndhurst Visitor Information Centre will point you in the right direction, whatever your interest in this very special area. As well as simply enjoying the woodland in its own right, via walking trails, cycle paths and bridleways, sites of interest can be visited at the following locations: Barton on Sea, Beaulieu, Brockenhurst, Burley, Fordingbridge, Hythe, Lymington, Lyndhurst, Milford on Sea, New Milton and Ringwood. Bicycles can be hired at several locations and pony trekking can also be booked at recommended local stables.

3 Find literary connections
Jane Austen spent the last years of her life in the village of Chawton, near Alton, and it was here that she wrote Mansfield Park, Emma and Persuasion. Today, the cottage where she lived is a Grade I listed building housing a museum which contains several of her possessions. Nearby is Chawton House Library, a centre for research into early women’s literature.

4. Ride the Watercress Line
The Mid Hants Railway, which once carried Hampshire watercress to London’s Covent Garden, runs through some lovely scenery, between New Alresford (near Winchester) to its terminus at Alton. The locomotives which run on this 10-mile line have been lovingly restored to recreate the Golden Age of steam; at Ropley, one of four stations on the line, visitors can view the workshops where these giants are conserved.

5. Explore the South Downs National Park
At Queen Elizabeth Country Park, near Horndean, visitors can enjoy way-marked trails, special events and seasonal activities year-round. The park takes in more than 1,000 acres of down and woodland and has its own visitor centre, shop and cafe.

6. Go back in time
Butser Ancient Farm, near Petersfield, is a reconstructed Iron Age settlement where visitors can discover what life was like in Britain all those centuries ago. This award-winning attraction combines research with live re-enactments to give an authentic flavour of our long-distant past.

7. Visit a Farmers’ Market
From watercress to water buffalo . . . Hampshire can boast some fine local produce, supporting thriving Farmers’ Markets in the following locations: Alton, Emsworth, Petersfield, Ringwood, Romsey, Southampton, Southsea and Winchester. In addition, there is an annual Watercress Festival in Alresford each May.

8. Discover ‘Downton’
The fortunes of Highclere Castle, near Newbury, took a turn for the better when it was chosen as a set for the popular period TV drama Downton Abbey. The rambling property had become prohibitively expensive to repair for owners, Lord and Lady Carnarvon. But since filming began there, in 2010, visitor numbers have trebled and its distinctive, fancy turrets are now familiar to the nation. The Castle is open from Easter to September, pre-booking is advised.

9. Go down to the gardens
The Sir Harold Hillier Gardens, near Romsey, have something for all the family to enjoy whatever the the season. Created in the 1953 by the plantsman whose name they take, these gardens feature several National Plant Collections and have specimens from all across the globe. The gardens have a cafe, gift shop and picnic areas.

10 Wild about animals
Marwell Wildlife Park, near Winchester, has a reputation for its rare breed conservation work and is home to more than 1,000 animals. Marwell’s ‘animal experiences’ include getting up close to some of the residents and becoming an animal ‘keeper’ for a day.
