One of its loveliest seaside resorts is pretty Lyme Regis, perhaps best-known as a film location for The French Lieutenant’s Woman, starring Meryl Streep and Jeremy Irons.
Facing the town, across Lyme Bay, stretches Chesil Beach, a fascinating, 18-mile shingle bank whose ever-changing shape is fashioned by wind and waves.
Behind this pebble barrier, protected from the sea, lies the Fleet Lagoon. This important wildlife sanctuary is a nature reserve which includes the adjacent Abbotsbury Swannery, where mute swans can be observed close-up going about their daily routines.
At its south-eastern end, Chesil comes to a dramatic conclusion in the Isle of Portland, a land mass connected to the south coast by the narrowest of strips. Renowned for its stone and red-and-white-striped lighthouse – Portland Bill – this spot, with its visitor centre, is today a popular tourist attraction.
East of here lies Weymouth Bay, with its traditional seaside attractions and sheltered sandy beaches stretching round to Swanage and the Isle of Purbeck – not a true island but a distinctive area characterised by its lovely, limestone scenery. The coastline here boasts many spectacular landforms – Old Harry Rocks, Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door. Inland, the countryside is a haven for many native species of plant and wildlife with the village of Corfe Castle nestling at its heart and, just to the east, lies the vast, natural Poole Harbour, with its many award-winning beaches.
The Dorset countryside and its people were captured for posterity by Victorian author Thomas Hardy. Just one of the county’s many historic properties, the cottage where he was born at Higher Bockhampton, near the county town of Dorchester, can today be visited as part of a centre run jointly by the county council and National Trust.
From luxury cottages Dorset and its many attractions await discovery.

While staying at one of our luxury Dorset cottages you’ll want to experience the best that this lovely county has to offer. Here’s a ‘Top 10’ of some of the best places to visit.

1. Discover Hardy’s Wessex
Visit the birthplace of Thomas Hardy, whose novels so vividly portray this corner of the English countryside during Victorian times. The thatched cottage where he was born, at Higher Bockhampton, near Dorchester, and adjacent visitor centre, invite you to explore his life and times. Max Gate, the Dorchester house Hardy designed and spent married life in up to his death in 1928, is also open to the public. Both houses are National Trust properties.

2. Go ‘Scouting’ for squirrels
Protected by the waters of the vast, natural Poole Harbour, Brownsea Island is both a haven for the endangered red squirrel and birthplace of the Scout and Guide movements. Today, under the custodianship of the National Trust, this very special place offers sanctuary to a wide range of wildlife. Visitors are invited to discover the fascinating history of the island and share in its special atmosphere with family friendly outdoor activities on offer between April and December.

3. Steam into the countryside
You don’t have to be a train-spotter to enjoy a trip on the Swanage Railway. Views over the lovely Purbeck countryside are one of the main attractions on this popular family day out, with steam trains running regularly along the six-mile route between Norden and Swanage. The journey takes 40 minutes with opportunities to stop off and explore along the way, including the lovely village of Corfe Castle and its station. Look out for the frequent special events hosted by the Swanage Railway Trust.

4. Step back in time
Dorset County Museum, in Dorchester, contains a treasure trove of artefacts from the past which allow the visitor to explore the past 6,000 years of this locality. From dinosaur bones to Victoriana, this award-winning attraction is designed to help visitors understand the fascinating story of this county.

5. Admire the Abbey
Forde Abbey, in the north of the county, is a popular attraction offering the chance to visit this family home which was once a Cistercian monastery. As well as the house, there are award-winning gardens to explore with a gift shop, exhibitions, a plant centre and refreshments also on offer. The gardens boast England’s highest powered fountain, which is switched on daily.

6. Explore Corfe’s keep
The village of Corfe Castle is dominated by ancient battlements which date back to pre-Norman times. Sited at a strategic crossing point in the Purbeck Hills, the walls of this monument have echoed to the sounds of many battles down the years. The English Civil War was their last great stand; destruction by Parliamentarians left the beautiful ruins we see today. The village itself, built of local Purbeck stone, is also well worth exploring.

7. Help rescued animals
The Margaret Green Animal Sanctuary, at Church Knowle, takes in all kinds of domestic and farm animals helping to re-home more than 1,000 of them each year. One of the country’s oldest rescue centres, it has a gift shop and cafe on-site with proceeds going towards the sanctuary’s work.

8. Go fossil-hunting
Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre is a registered educational charity based in an old cement factory in this seaside resort. The centre runs regular fossil walks (booking essential during school holidays) and has an extensive collection of fossils on show. Visit http://www.charmouth.org/ for more information.

9. Monkey around!
The Monkey World Ape Rescue Centre, near Wareham, is internationally acclaimed and offers sanctuary to animals suffering from the illegal trade in primate smuggling. Most of the monkeys here have been captured as babies from the wild in Asia and Africa, their parents killed by poachers, and sold on as exotic pets or performing animals. The centre works with authorities abroad to combat the illegal trade.

10. Stand in the footsteps of the famous
Atmospheric Lyme Regis, with its ancient Cobb harbour, is a picturesque town where late resident, the author John Fowles, wrote his novel French Lieutenant’s Woman. Here, you can stand and gaze out to sea, just as actress Meryl Streep did, in the film of the same name.
From luxury cottages Dorset, its beautiful beaches and great attractions, are within easy reach.
