The city can trace its roots to pre-Roman times but is best-known the world over for its colleges which date from the university’s foundation, in 1209, by academics fleeing that other great seat of English learning, Oxford.
Any visit should take in the splendid architecture of King’s – and the adjacent Queen’s – College, Trinity’s Great Court and Wren Library – designed by Sir Christopher and housing the manuscript of AA Milne’s Winnie-the-Pooh – and Magdalene with its magnificent Pepys Building.
The university’s Fitzwilliam Museum is a treasure trove of art and antiquities. Located in Trumpington Street, entry is free.
While it has its fair share of modern shopping malls, there are also small, independent traders within the city centre on streets including Rose Crescent, Sussex Street, King Street and Green Street, while seven days a week there is a market on the central Market Square.
The historic heart of the city covers a relatively small, flat geographic area which means sightseeing tours are best undertaken on foot, or by boat, bicycle or open-top bus. Parks and green spaces offer an antidote from the city’s built environment as does the River Cam, whose waters offer a tranquil alternative for viewing the architecture from The Backs.
